Former Man United fan favourite set for a spell on the sidelines as he undergoes heart procedure

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is set to undergo a procedure to treat a mild heart issue. The Scotland international started Napoli’s 2-1 defeat to Como before being replaced in the 56th minute.

McTominay has been a hit at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium ever since leaving Old Trafford in the summer of 2024. The 29 year old helped the Italian club win the Serie A title in his debut campaign, and also played a key role in their second-placed finish last season.

Affectionately called “McFratm”, the player has already earned a permanent place in the hearts of the Napoli faithful. He was briefly linked with a return to Old Trafford this summer as United looked to reinforce the midfield, but the move never materialised.

McTominay has started both of the Partenopei’s games this season but it now appears that he will be sidelined for a while.

Napoli confirm McTominay absence

Napoli have confirmed that McTominay will undergo a procedure to treat a mild benign arrhythmia. An official statement shared on their website read: “Due to the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo PFA surgery in the next few days.”

The Italian side also confirmed that the player will be sidelined until October, concluding: “He will be available again after the international break.”

The Scot has since taken to social media to share a message to fans, assuring them that he will not be away for long. He wrote: “See you soon Napoli. I won’t take long.”

According to The Times, McTominay will undergo a cardiac arrhythmia ablation, which can take 15 minutes to four hours depending on the patient. The procedure “uses heat or cold energy to create tiny scars in the heart. The scars block faulty heart signals and restore a typical heartbeat.”

The recovery process can vary from a few days to around a week, although McTominay is unlikely to feature for Scotland during the September international break.

Noussair Mazraoui had a similar heart issue after arriving at Old Trafford in the summer of 2024. The Moroccan underwent a precautionary procedure after experiencing heart palpitations during a Premier League game against Aston Villa on 6 October.

While it was initially believed that Mazraoui would be sidelined for several weeks, he was back earlier than expected. The 28 year old even featured in the 2-1 win over Brentford on 19 October, and started the Europa League tie against Fenerbahce six days later.

As such, McTominay could also make a speedy recovery and return ahead of schedule.
