Jamie Carragher shares Tottenham transfer theory during Newcastle defeat - 'The evidence'

Jamie Carragher reckons Tottenham Hotspur are sufficiently short in attacking areas to push Roberto De Zerbi into further transfer activity. Spurs have splashed out considerably this summer and brought in Savio and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City in an attempt to bolster their forward line.

Yet they failed to find the net in the opening 45 minutes of their first home fixture of the Premier League campaign against Newcastle United. Savio was absent, days after his goal and assist in the Carabao Cup victory over Charlton Athletic, due to muscle fatigue.

Marmoush was given a start in the XI following his arrival on a temporary deal. Carragher felt Spurs' toothless attacking showing will prompt additional transfer moves before September 1.

He said: "They have been let down in the final third, I think it is probably the evidence that De Zerbi will still be in the market after this game, in the next few days, for attacking reinforcements.

"They have certainly been left a little bit short in this first half by the ability of the wide players to beat the man or do something clever or creative."

Spurs' summer signings were on show with Sandro Tonali and Matheus Fernandes starting alongside Marmoush. The clearest opportunity of the half came to Pedro Porro but his strike from 12 yards out sailed over the bar.

The opening exchanges were decidedly one-sided, with Spurs commanding the ball against the Magpies yet failing to convert their dominance into any meaningful attempts on Lukas Hornicek's goal.

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, De Zerbi is eyeing further additions to his squad following a £300million spending spree this summer.

Ahead of the Newcastle fixture, he said: "I didn't expect a market like we have done. I think we can do one player more and in one specific position.

"Yesterday we went for dinner with the owner, with Vinai (Venkatesham, chief executive), with Johan (Lange, sporting director) and with Enrico (Venturelli). We spoke about this.

"It can be possible out or in. The transfer market is crazy and we have to be able to find the new players. If some players go out, leave, or to make another player (come in), I don't know.

"We are very happy with the market we have done until now. It has been more than my expectation at the beginning. We have to see in the last day of the market what can happen with him.

"I've been very clear with every player. If you speak clearly at the beginning you can't expect a surprise. The players who want to leave, they left. Maybe we have some players who want to leave and they are waiting for the offer. We are waiting for the offer. To stay here, they have to feel proud and happy.

"If you want to leave and you have not found the offer, it's your problem, not my problem. I give respect, I kiss you, I hug you, but at the end [they] have to stay calm inside the dressing room. And not to speak too much because the rules have been clear."

The Italian's team selection raised eyebrows, with Kevin Danso, Pape Matar Sarr and Richarlison all notably absent. The three players have been at the centre of transfer rumours throughout the window, with Sunderland reportedly seeing a loan bid for Danso knocked back.
