Jamie Vardy finally decides next club as Leicester icon signs one-year deal

Jamie Vardy has signed for Burnley on a deal until the end of the season.

The Leicester icon, 39, has been without a club since leaving Italian side Cremonese at the end of last season. He had been linked with a shock move to Everton after they failed to land a striker on deadline day.

But Vardy has now penned a deal with Burnley following their relegation from the Premier League.

The Clarets have endured a chastening start in the Championship, mustering just two draws and three defeats from their opening five games, leaving them bottom of the table.

“I’m really happy to now be here at Burnley FC," he said. "This club has a proper footballing history and passionate fans who deserve a team that represents them and their town.

"I can’t wait to get going on the pitch and help the team move in the right direction.”

Burnley boss Nicky Hayen added: “We are delighted to welcome Jamie to Burnley FC. His experience and leadership will be invaluable to our squad, and we believe he can make a significant impact on our campaign.

Vardy was the subject of interest from home and abroad following his departure from Cremonese. As well as Everton, boyhood club Sheffield Wednesday were linked as were West Ham, Wrexham and Sao Paolo in Brazil.

Vardy wrote his name into English football folklore by firing Leicester to the most unlikely title win in history in 2016. He also won the FA Cup and two Championship titles with the Foxes.

He played 26 times for England, scoring seven goals.
