Julian Alvarez tells Atletico Madrid he is staying as Barcelona dream is postponed

Julian Alvarez has decided to stay at Atletico Madrid until at least the January transfer window, bringing an end to one of the most complicated transfer sagas of the summer while keeping Barcelona’s hopes of signing the Argentine alive.

According to SPORT, Alvarez has informed Atletico sporting director Mateu Alemany that he will continue at the Metropolitano despite his preference for a move to Barcelona and the interest he received from several clubs.

The decision means the 26-year-old will remain with Atletico for the first half of the season.

At the same time, it also appears to close the door on a late move to the Premier League, with Arsenal having been the most serious alternative throughout the summer.

Alvarez chooses to stay despite Barcelona desire

As far as Barcelona are concerned, this is certainly not the end of the story.

The Catalan club made their admiration for Alvarez increasingly public, with president Joan Laporta even speaking openly about their interest.

That did not go down well in Madrid, where Atletico’s leadership remained opposed to negotiating with Barça.

Alvarez’s decision is significant because his preference for Barcelona has been one of the defining elements of the story.

The Argentine had attracted multiple offers during the summer, with Arsenal particularly keen on taking him to England. Yet the forward was not motivated by the prospect of joining another destination.

Atletico were unwilling to sell him to Barcelona, while Alvarez did not want to accept another move simply for the sake of leaving Madrid.

The result is that he will now continue playing under Diego Simeone, at least for this transfer window, as Barcelona are expected to return for him in January.

Throughout the drama, the biggest obstacle was Atletico’s position.

The Madrid club’s board never appeared willing to enter meaningful negotiations with Barcelona over Alvarez.

In fact, club CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin repeatedly made the club’s stance clear, leaving Barça with little room to manoeuvre.

For now, Barcelona have already strengthened their attack with Gabriel Jesus, but that does not necessarily mean Alvarez has disappeared from their long-term plans.

The Argentine remains a player they admire, and his own preference could keep the possibility of a future move alive in January.
