Manchester United have made an enquiry for

Inter

Milan left-back

Carlos Augusto

and assessed West Ham United full-back Oliver Scarles,

according to Ben Jacobs

Man United are looking to strengthen in the position and sign a quality cover and competition for Luke Shaw this summer.

West Ham’s star Scarles plays primarily at left-back but can also play further forward as a wing-back or midfielder.

The 20-year-old could be open to leaving the London Stadium club after the Hammers got relegated last season.

However, the Red Devils have not made any concrete move for Scarles, and the enquiry for Augusto was back in April.

Jacobs told The United Stand

“He is capable of playing in left midfield or at left-back. They have assessed some young names like Oliver Scarles at West Ham as a full-back option, who is relatively versatile.

“But the main priority will be trying to find somebody who is a starter and is more of a specialist on that left-hand side.”

Augusto is also a versatile defender, with the Brazilian capable of playing on both wings and as a centre-back.

The 27-year-old has played 100 league games for

, helping them win two Serie A titles in his three seasons in Italy.

The Red Devils could do with his quality and experience, but they are currently concentrating on signing a third midfielder.

Man United have bolstered their options in the middle of the park with the additions of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos and Belgian star Youri Tielemans.

However, they want one more signing in the position with Manuel Ugarte set to miss a large chunk of next season.

The Red Devils also want a left winger and a forward to enhance their squad depth, which is why versatile players capable of playing in attack and defence are on their radar.
