Mount forced off through injury as Man Utd suffer blow in PSG friendly

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has been handed an injury concern ahead of the start of the season after being forced to substitute Mason Mount against Paris Saint-Germain.

Mount has been a bright spark for United during their pre-season friendlies so far. But the midfielder had to leave the pitch in Gothenburg on Saturday afternoon in the 20th minute against PSG, with Tyler Fletcher replacing him.

He was able to jog off the pitch before speaking to the United medical staff on the touchline. The severity of the injury was unclear and it could just prove to be a precautionary move. Things went from bad to worse in the second half when veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton was replaced by Dermot Mee following what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

The 27-year-old has failed to live up to his £55million price tag since arriving in the summer of 2023, with injuries hampering his efforts. The former Chelsea man has started just 25 Premier League matches in three seasons for United.

He left the pitch due to some discomfort on Saturday, with Carrick taking no chances. Mount will be assessed, but Carrick may well be worried given his injury history and the proximity to the start of the 2026/27 season. United kick-off their campaign against newly-promoted Hull City on August 22.

They were 1-0 down when Mount departed the pitch, having conceded a goal to Ibrahim Mbaye in the second minute of the match. Bryan Mbeumo made it 1-1 in the 32nd minute with a low finish into the bottom corner after good work from Amad Diallo.

United have lost 1-0 to Wrexham, beaten Rosenborg 5-0 and overcome Atletico Madrid 2-1 in their pre-season friendlies so far. After playing PSG in Sweden this weekend, they head to Ireland to face Leeds on Wednesday night and to Poland to play AC Milan in Wroclaw next Saturday.

While some of United's players have returned late to Carrick's squad following involvement in the World Cup, Mount has made the most of the time. He has been one of the stand-out players in the friendlies and will be hoping to force his way into the starting line-up come the start of the season.

There will be plenty of competition for places. United have spent a combined £87million to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa this summer to bolster their options in central midfield.

Mount took the captain's armband in Norway and has been looking forward to playing a leadership role this season. "You have different types of leaders," he said recently. "You have ones that are very vocal, but I see myself as one who leads by example and never stops working. I've been captain previously, years ago, so I love the role.

"Especially with a lot of younger players on the pitch, and off it as well, being able to speak to them and make them feel comfortable, it's something I really like."
