Omar Marmoush reveals why he joined Tottenham as shirt number announced

Egyptian forward has followed Man City team-mate Savio to north London

Tottenham have confirmed the signing of Omar Marmoush from Manchester City.

The Egyptian forward heads to north London on an initial season-long loan deal that includes the obligation for a permanent transfer next summer, believed to be worth around £60million including add-ons.

Marmoush follows Savio - AKA Savinho - from City to Spurs, with the Brazilian winger having completed his £85m switch to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this week, before scoring on his debut in the 5-1 Carabao Cup rout of Charlton of Wednesday night.

Marmoush has been handed the No22 shirt by Tottenham, which previously belonged to midfielder Conor Gallagher, who switched to the No8 this season following the departure of Yves Bissouma.

Other players to have worn that number for Spurs in recent times include the likes of Harry Winks, Ryan Mason and Paulinho.

Explaining his decision to join Spurs, Marmoush told the club’s official website: "It feels amazing to be here. I'm so excited to get started with the team and I can't wait to meet the fans.

"Tottenham Hotspur is one of the biggest clubs in England, if not the world, and the project was very attractive to me.

"I've spoken with the head coach [Roberto De Zerbi], I loved what he had to say and I'm sure our passion for the game will go very well together."

The high-profile double deal for Savio and Marmoush forms part of an ambitious summer of spending from Tottenham, who have lavished more than £300m on eight new signings for De Zerbi’s first full season in charge following back-to-back 17th-place finishes in the Premier League, having only escaped relegation on the final day last term.

More spending is possible before the transfer window closes at 11pm BST on Tuesday night (September 1), with Spurs retaining an interest in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo and also known to be admirers of Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams.

Tottenham broke their club transfer record twice in the space of just a few days last month as they welcomed midfield duo Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes for a combined fee of around £185m, also acquiring Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52m.

Defenders Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi both joined on free transfers earlier in the summer, as well as goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Marmoush joined City from German club Eintracht Frankfurt for £59m in January 2025, scoring 16 goals and providing six assists in 62 total appearances across all competitions.

However, he only started eight Premier League games under Enzo Maresca’s predecessor Pep Guardiola last term and, much like Savio, was keen to depart the Etihad Stadium this summer in search of more regular minutes.

Marmoush’s Tottenham debut could come on Saturday evening, when De Zerbi’s side will look to build on the momentum of their Carabao Cup victory over Charlton and bounce back from the humbling 3-0 defeat at Brentford on opening day as they host Newcastle in the top-flight.

The departures of Savio and Marmoush come amid a flurry of late window activity from City, who have welcomed Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille and agreed a deal for Palmeiras attacker Allan Elias as they plot an official bid for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

They are also interested in Gakpo and Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye, while Jack Grealish could now follow the likes of Rodri, Nico Gonzalez, Tijjani Reijnders and James Trafford through the exit door.
