Tottenham told they should have had penalty against Newcastle after referee review

Tottenham lost their first home Premier League game of the season to Newcastle United but some feel Spurs should have been given a penalty during the match

Tottenham should have been awarded a second-half penalty during Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United. That is the verdict of former Premier League forward Jay Bothroyd, who believes that Omar Marmoush was fouled inside the box and Spurs should have had a spot-kick.

The incident occurred in the 48th minute when Marmoush went down after he was caught by Malick Thiaw. The Egypt international got to a loose ball first and it appeared as though Thiaw kicked through the back of his right leg before the new Spurs forward tumbled to the floor.

Although Marmoush and the Tottenham fans were incensed and felt a penalty should have been given, referee Peter Bankes waved away appeals and decided against giving Spurs a spot-kick. VAR, meanwhile, had a closer look at the incident and agreed with Bankes' on-field call.

But Bothroyd believes Tottenham were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty. "That's the wrong decision," the ex-Cardiff City man told Sky Sports. "It should be given as a penalty. That's cute play from the forward, it's no the defender's fault. The striker comes round and gets the toe on it.

"There was the Jarrad Branthwaite incident last week - which was offside, but it was a penalty. This one should be as well. I wouldn't say that's minimal contact. He's kicked his foot."

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood also felt Spurs should have been given a spot-kick for the foul on Marmoush - and was shocked that it wasn't given.

"The threshold is massively higher," Sherwood told Sky Sports. "It should be given. There's certainly contact in there. Thiaw hasn't seen him coming. Marmoush has done enough to get his toe on it. He's praying for contact.

"Has Thiaw made contact with the ball? No. Has he made contact with the player? Yes. Has he denied a goalscoring opportunity? 100 per cent. Penalty. It would have been a different game. Then we'd be talking about De Zerbi in a different way."

The scoreline was 0-0 when Marmoush went down and Tottenham ended up going on to lose 2-0 with Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scoring for Newcastle. It marked the second straight defeat this season for Spurs, who were beaten 3-0 at Brentford on the opening weekend.
