Trump on collision course as FIFA's worst-case scenario over World Cup plans unfolds

U.S. Soccer, as part of CONCACAF, has publicly opposed Gianni Infantino's World Cup proposals, despite reports that President Donald Trump's administration had been briefed on the plans.

The football federation for North and Central America, alongside the Caribbean, openly voiced its opposition to Infantino's vision, which sought to establish FIFA Forward Enterprise to consolidate FIFA's commercial operations, spanning sponsorship, ticketing, licensing and broadcasting - alongside tournament delivery.

The scheme then involved offloading a minority stake, believed to be somewhere between 20 and 30 per cent, to private investors, including figures with connections to Trump. Joshua Kushner, brother of the US president's son-in-law Jared, was amongst the backers behind the proposal.

The Trump administration was also thought to have been consulted regarding the scheme, which has been publicly rebuffed by UEFA, who declared it will boycott all FIFA competitions until the proposal is abandoned. While CONCACAF held back from threatening competition withdrawals, it has made its lack of support for the plan abundantly clear.

Following their own statement's release, US Soccer's X account emphasised their public resistance to Infantino.

It stated: "U.S. Soccer stands with Concacaf and its members," shortly after CONCACAF publicly declared they will not back Infantino's proposal.

Given that Trump's administration was consulted about the concept, the fact the US' equivalent to the Football Association has so openly rejected the scheme represents a setback to both Infantino and Trump and could force the pair into an uncomfortable discussion in the very near future.

Furthermore, the embattled FIFA president also indicated his proposal required backing from just over 50 per cent of FIFA's 211 member nations to proceed. With UEFA and CONCACAF already opposing it, he has already lost 96 nations (55 in UEFA and 41 in CONCACAF).

In their statement, the federation representing North and South America wrote: "Concacaf is a confederation united by the love of our game, where football comes first. Guided by this philosophy over the past ten years we have built, from the ground up, an organisation founded on service, transparent governance, and the long-term stewardship of football.

"History has shown FIFA and the football family what happens when the custodians of the game lose sight of these values. With this in mind, Concacaf today convened a meeting of the presidents of its 41 Member Associations, together with its President, Council members, and its FIFA Council members, to discuss a proposal developed and presented by the FIFA President to establish 'FIFA Forward Enterprise' and sell interests in the FIFA World Cup to private investors.

"During the meeting, the membership expressed deep concerns about the lack of due process surrounding the proposal, the artificially short deadline imposed, and the absence of any review or approval by the relevant FIFA governance bodies. In addition, the need for private equity investment to fund new and existing FIFA Forward programs following the most profitable FIFA World Cup in history was questioned.

"The discussion reinforced the need for greater transparency and proper governance. For these reasons, Concacaf and its 41 Member Associations have: Rejected the proposal.

"Tasked their FIFA Council Members with engaging FIFA to determine how existing vast FIFA reserves could be used to increase FIFA Forward funding for football development across our region; and tasked their FIFA Council Members with instructing the FIFA President to ensure that any matter follows the proper governance processes via staff and FIFA Council, in accordance with the FIFA Statutes.
