With friends like Donald Trump, who needs enemies?

Not that Gianni Infantino is short of those.

But the fact the root cause of Infantino's soiled and stained reputation as FIFA president is now attempting to support him, does nothing but add more fuel to a blazing footballing fire.

As ironies go, Trump offering his backing to his big mate during his darkest hours, is right up there. The startling arrogance of the powerful duo means it might be lost on them both.

But it shouldn't, when it comes those who genuinely love the game in general. Trump insists it would be a "terrible mistake" if Infantino was ousted from his position.

"FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing president Gianni Infantino", Trump said.

"He is fantastic, having just presided over the most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented. If he is gone, it will never be as successful or profitable again."

The US president has waited more than a week to lend his support to someone battling to remain in office.

After UEFA, CONCAF and the Asian Football Federation (AFF) accused the Swiss of breaking trust "through deception", with his aborted proposal to flog the commercial and ticketing rights of future World Cups to private investors.

Trump discussing the merits of "terrible mistakes" is akin to Lance Armstrong discussing the merits of clean sport.

The greatest mistake Infantino made was getting into bed with Trump in the first place. Repeating the one he made when doing the same with Russia president Vladimir Putin back in 2018.

It's about the company you keep.

Infantino has a close relationship with Trump, and awarded him the inaugural FIFA 'Peace Prize' in December 2025. While the man running the investment group behind Infantino's shameful plan, just happens to be the brother of Trump's son-in-law.

Which makes Trump's support more transparent than water. If someone could name me two men more motivated by money than Trump and Infantino, I'm all ears.

Trump even references the fact in his social media post, claiming a future World Cup would never be as "profitable again" without Infantino.

The truth is, Infantino needs Trump's support like a hole in the head. Because it means nothing, coming from one of the most divisive men ever to walk the planet.

Trump has had a huge role in getting Infantino into this deep hole in the first place. And we must now hope Trump keeps on digging, to the point where his mate cannot ever get out of it.
