Yalcouye’s assured performance shows the post-Baleba era might not be so bad after all

Malick Yalcouye offered Brighton & Hove Albion a glimpse of their post-Baleba midfield at Stamford Bridge, standing out in a 4-3 defeat to Chelsea. NY Times notes the club hope he can develop into their next midfield goldmine.

Fabian Hurzeler is reshaping midfield after the £70m sale of Carlos Baleba to Manchester United last week. Yalcouye arrived from IFK Gothenburg in 2024 for £7.6m.

A strong pre-season and Yasin Ayari’s slight ankle injury earned Yalcouye a start. Hurzeler lauded his personality and running, and used him advanced with Gross while Olivier Boscagli sat as a clear No 6. Ayari is expected back for Leeds on Saturday, and 18-year-old Matias Orozco has joined from Deportivo Cali for £3.5m to be loaned out in Europe.
