Webb to make public statement TODAY on Manchester derby controversy

Howard Webb will explain the VAR blunder that settled the Manchester derby as he goes in front of the cameras on Tuesday night.

Sunday's clash at Old Trafford saw Manchester City leave with all three points courtesy of Erling Haaland's second-half strike, which left those connected with Manchester United fuming. Haaland was onside when he finished from close range, but Enzo Fernandez was offside and made an attempt to play the ball.

After initially being disallowed, the VAR advised Michael Oliver to give the goal, which has since seen the refereeing body come under the microscope.

In the opening edition of this season's Match Officials Mic'd Up programme Webb, who leads the group of referees and has spent years trying to raise standards, will go through how the decision was ultimately made.

In light of the incident, VAR official Matt Donohue and his assistant Blake Antrobus have both been dropped for this weekend's games following the error.

Within hours of the final whistle the refereeing body came out and acknowledged its mistake and Pro Ref admitted fault, claiming that "VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his (Fernandez's) position and should have recommended an on-field review."

They added: “Contact has been made with Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we deem is an error of judgment. A review of the incident will take place.”

When the decision was initially made, the Premier League Match Centre explained the awarding of the goal on social media, stating that they felt Fernandez missing the ball, despite going for it, was crucial in them awarding Haaland's goal.

They said: "VAR checked the referee's call of no goal for offside - and determined that Haaland was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded. The VAR also deemed that while in an offside position, Fernandez didn't play the ball."

United defender Lisandro Martinez, who was the player impacted by Fernandez's position, said it was an "injustice" while boss Michael Carrick said he was "confused" by the decision as he lost for only the second time as manager at Old Trafford. It continued the team's underwhelming start to the year as they're left with four points from four games.
